In the UK, it seems to be that subtitling on children's dvds is really rare. Anyone know much about children's dvds? Are there many subtitled children's dvds that I have missed or am I right about there being very few?

I'm wondering is the logic that young children can't read well yet.

Well I had bought Wallace and Gromit DVDs and they are subtitled. Also Reader's Digest did sell a couple of "Wind in the Willows" DVDs ( the animation with Rick Mayall's voice for Mr Toad ) and they did have subtitles but they are no longer sold by RD. I once hired a Harry Potter DVD ( Goblet of Fire ) and that was subbed too.

So I conclude that the most popular ones are most likely to be subbed. I think the logic of not having subs for children's DVDs on the grounds that they can't read yet is rather dubious as there are deaf parents of hearing children who may watch them with their children and would need to know what has been said in order to reassure or reinforce lessons.

Unless the British education system is so dire that school leavers can't read at all which rather defeats subtitles! wink.gif

Oh and I recently bought a Morph DVD as a 4th birthday present for a hearing child and that has NO subs but then again who can hear Morph clearly????

IT depends on the size of the production companies - you can see that all sport-related DVDs are NOT subtitled. That's because the company would have to pay a hell a lot for subtitles to be included.

The DDA doesn't cover the issue. We need to enforce the subtitles to become a law so that we will be able to get ALL subtitled.

This is untrue. The cost of adding subtitles would easily be made up by the sales of less than 100 extra DVDs. It's sheer ignorance that is to blame, the DVD industry is simply not aware of the market for subtitled DVDs.

For a list of subtitled children's dvds:

for a list of subtitled sports DVDs:

admittedly, not many sports DVDs in the list yet, more to do with the fact that we dont have enough information on sports DVDs yet.

Ah, thanks for that list. That's very helpful. Beppo you are absolutely right about the logic being dubious. And, yes, I agree it should be law. The reason it came up is that I'm actually currently involved in a production going to dvd and am being told straight out that I can't have subtitles. Initially sold on the money issue (the production isn't just small, it's tiny) and then was presented with the idea of young children not being able to read. It seems crazy to me that it isn't mandatory but, sure enough, looking around it seemed a tough job finding children's dvds with subtitles but that list helps.

You need to be very wary of these - although most Disney DVDs have English subtitles on their main feature, they do NOT, as a policy, put English subtitles on any of the bonus features that come with their DVD releases. They do however put subtitles in several foreign languages on their bonus features.
