Beverley
Hi,

I saw the post about Deaf Surfers, it made me wonder if any of you is Deaf Snowboarders. At the moment I am having snowboarding lessons and now progressing slowly.
I'm going to snowboarding holiday in April, I can't wait!

So if you do snowboarding, reply as I would like to meet other snowboarders biggrin.gif
Bluestarlie
I know a few deaf friends who do snowboarding and they have told me that it is pretty hard. I haven't tried it, but it looks damn hard. I will fall alot and get my butt bruised! I'm a skier, but not good at it though. I love water skiing and tubing.
Sophieeee
One of my friends is a snowboarder and he happens to be Lyds' brother. He did a course in which he learned how to teach snowboarding. Hopefully when Lyds logs in, she will give u some info about him.
ryanm
i have just came back from a skiing holiday in austria.
I have done all skiing, snowblading(short skis) and snowboarding all in one week!
I did snowboarding for the first time, and found it hard at the start but i managed to do it at the end of the day. Im willing to carry on learning how to snow board as i think im capable of doing it well.
Sarge
Isn't Andrew Stibbs a professional/amatuer snowboarder?
blondie21
hey, i am glad to see this topic! As i am starting snowboardin this easter! I cant wait to go as itll be my first time ever! Hehe!
blondie21
Anyway, y are you looking for other deaf snowboarders??? because you are wanting to plan a trip for those deaf snowboarders??? even though you may not know them?!
Pattakasha
i snowboard and i go to canada and france nearly every year and soon im off to swizterland!
Beverley
I went back to snowboarding today, last time I went was last year!
I had refreshers course and I'm so glad I did as I have learnt a lot more now and I feel more confidence now to go to my snowboarding hols in April. clap.gif Also today it was snowing so the dry slope was filled with snow and it was so much easier to control my board! Brill. But also had quite large lumps of hail and that hurt a lot when snowboarding heh

blondie21, I'm only asking as I would like know and to talk to other deaf snowboarders. Not for to go on holiday with, but you never know, maybe one day! biggrin.gif

Sarge, Andrew Stibbs is a pro/amateur I think. So do you know him?

ryanm. I have learnt skiing now snowboarding. I think it is cool that you did a lot in one week, but did it cost you more money to do them three?
Sophieeee
Yeah, Andrew Stibbs' a snowboarder and participated in the last Winter Deaflympic, which took place in Sweden. He had to raise money for it and it wasn't easy, so I presume that he isn't a professional snowboarder.

Dunno whether he's a member of this site but if he isn't, I could let him know for you, Bev.
Beverley
it is ok Pepsi girl, I have met him before, briefly and my friend is his friend. Thanks anyway biggrin.gif
Sophieeee
Great! U could get him to help u wiv this, eh?

bev=i did all 3 things in one week, and it doesnt really cost me much, i only paid extra for the snowboard boots, as i already have my own ski boots. yea?

I like to try out the winter deaflympics, so do anyone know the web link for it? as im quite interested!
Beverley

Alazzo, Andrew used the JAMA fund for a snowboarding course that he did in France wiv Lyds' bro. Not sure if he also used it for the Deaflympics.
LydsD
Hiya,

Andrew Stibbs is an amatuer snowboarder - not professional!

Yeah my brother is a snowboarder - he is really brilliant at it and very natural. He should go to winter deaflympics in Sweden but the funding wasn't that good, so he decided to not going rather than throw money out of his pocket.

I know some Deaf snowboarders more than Deaf surfers.

L
Beverley
Cool, so there are quite a few of Deaf Snowboarders then.. clap.gif
LydsD
Urmm, about 20 deaf friends of mine are snowboarders including me. I am sure that there are lots of Deaf snowboarders in the UK. clap.gif
spursgizmo
have been hearing u could learn snowboarding with a group of deaffies up in Milton Keynes Snow Dome ... dont knw how often they do it and i how it progress .. could try ask lydia and see if she knws such a thing ..
Beverley
I know a group from Norwich is going to Milton Keys for Snowboarding on 5th March...I'm not sure if I'm going yet.
LydsD
That what I heard but I rather to go there with a small group of friends, if they want to learn more because I don't really keen to ski on the fake snow slope and very small, it would take me less than one minute from top to bottom.

But I will go there with friends, as some of them never been ski before, so we go there before go to REAL ski slope in France next year!

Milton Keyes is deffo worth for people who never been ski, or wanted to learn more before go to REAL ski world.

Have fun :afro:
Beverley
Cool, heard from where? Just wondering biggrin.gif
Sophieeee
Bluestarlie, I love tubing too!!! LydsD and I once went tubing in a cave, where you could see thousands of beautiful glowworms, in New Zealand! Loved every minute of the experience!!!
Beverley
Wow glowworms!!! I wouldn't mind seeing that! You are lucky to see it :P hehe cool.
Sophieeee
If ya go to New Zealand, make sure that you go to one of these glowworm caves in the beautiful Waitomo. If ya wanna grab more info on these caves, click this - http://www.waitomocaves.co.nz/home/Page.aspx?page_id=357

LydsD and I chose to go on the Black Labyrinth trip, which proved to be a fantastic experience!! I had to pinch my skin that I was seeing all these glowworms for real!!
LydsD
Yeah, I loved it so much! Remember that swedish couple!? Haha!
The experience was so fantastic and it is very highly recommend!

But the problem is the guide told us to switch the light (from top of our helmet) off to see the glowworms which was so brilliant BUT could not hear what the guide said because it was so black pitch! You can't see the glowworms with the light on. We just sat, and stared a zillion of glowworms around the cave which was so beautiful. We sat down for too long in the black pitch, funnily we could not hear anything and felt so quiet! I started to splash the water to everybody in the black pitch, and PespiGirl knew it was me so joined with me to splash the water!

I will never forgot this experience ever!
Sophieeee
Oh yeah, I remmy the Swedish couple and us having fun in the cave!! I also remmy the Italian gal, who was pushy, making sure that she always stood next to her boyf in the group! So hilarous!!
LydsD
Haha I rememeber that as well!

Oh yeah, remember that Scottish guy who booked a trip for us to swim with dolphins in New Zealand? He tried to talk to us, but we just missed what he said then we looked at each other *out of blue* we bursted to laugh and could not stop loud laughing for about last 10-15 minutes! Oops! I find it so funny though.
Sophieeee
Yeah, I remmy that very well!!! Felt sorry for the guy cos he didn't know why we were laughing!!!! Soooooo hilarous!!!
spursgizmo
ok guys interesting reading about ur down under experience but this topic is mainly about "deaf snowbooarders" ... u could perhaps create a new topic on "wots the most enriching/interesting/adventurous travelling experience u've ever experienced??" would b wise ... sorry for any inconvinence ... enjoy while u last !!
Sophieeee
Ooops, sorry!!!
spursgizmo

JoJo

Lisa2k
 I am a snowboarder too! smile.gif Only a beginner and I am going on holiday to Tignes, France with Beverley who started this topic smile.gif

Hopefully we both will pick easily on the real snow, cos there aren't enough spaces to learn on the dry slope in UK. It hurt like hell if you fell on the dry slope! sad.gif
postie

Oh yeah its so fun and of course good exercise!

The best way to get infos is to go to the nearest ski club. I attended to the course at the local ski club, it was set up to teach deafies on snowboarding and we had an interpreter too to help us. It was about 6-8 sessions for the course.

You could always try and set up with the manager at the ski club and see if you can set up the course for the deafies?
Beverley
Good advice Lisa smile.gif

Would be cool if more ski clubs was set up to teach deafies biggrin.gif
