Just rented 'The Last Samurai', and though I'm not sure about the wide-screen, sell-through version of the film, the extra features in the rental version only have French subtitles. No English captions or subtitles whatsoever, other than on the main film.

So much for the 'region 1 is better subtitled than region 2' argument... :wall:

Well, I've got the R2 version right here. Gonna watch it in a minute and see if they were really telling the truth about it being fully subtitled here....

Just checked the special features disc - it IS subtitled, in English smile.gif

Just discovered the Director's commentary for The Last Samurai is NOT subtitled. thumbdown.gif

So will have to reduce the rating to "Partially subtitled".

Will email WB to tell them that they forgot to subtitle the commentary!

You were a bit quick to give them full marks mat before checking everything smile.gif commentaries are the most important special feature I like to watch with subtitles.

mat is there any way you can incorporate what is subtitled and what isnt into the main section of the DVD information, sometimes the user comments arent very helpful and you end up having to read all of peoples opinions and comments just to see what's subtitled and what isnt. Alot of films I checked were listed as having everything subtitled when in reality this wasnt true. I guess this is a difficult think to do as you yourself dont check over every single DVD and a lot of the information comes from other users. Just a shame that both the DVD packaging and the comments on the website can't be 100% spot on.

Oh and sometimes comments list three [S] which indicates a well subtitled DVD when only infact the feature is subtitled. (although other comments do state otherwise) such as the pirates of the caribbean dvd for instance.

(PS. For some reason I can't get the quoting system to work properly when I was replying to this post)

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I was quick to give Last Samurai full marks. This is because the information I received was from WB several weeks before release. I called WB personally to ask them specifically about this title. As this was several weeks before release I had no way of checking the DVD myself. I think it is very important to try and get pre-release subtitling information and usually it turns out to be 100% accurate, in this case I would say it was almost 100% accurate. Now I know the facts, I can go back and edit. Don't forget that not everybody thinks the commentary is the most important special feature, in fact I know several people who specifically have told me they don't like commentaries.

Yes, I am relying on other people's information. Otherwise this website would not work at all. I would love to make a living from dvd-subtitles.com and spend my whole time watching and reviewing DVDs myself but sadly this is not the case.

No, I cannot incorporate the subtitling info into the main section. I cannot control what information I am sent, although I do moderate it. One person might give me a comprehensive list of extras while another might sum it up in one sentence. Also, the main information is automatically updated from my data service and this needs to be separate from the comments and ratings which are entered manually.

If there are titles which you think have been rated inaccurately then please let me know, or better add your own comments. I am dependent on people to check accurately that the barcode matches the title they are commenting on. Every comment is moderated by myself and I have a lot of comments which have not been put live, because they are either confusing or irrelevant, or I am suspicious that they are not commenting about the same title. In these cases I email the user concerned, and if I do not get a repy to clarify things then the comment gets binned.

Relatively few people take the trouble to put comments on the website, and to them I am extremely grateful, I will always be prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they are giving accurate information to the best of their knowledge. I get an awful lot of emails from people demanding info on this title or that title, when they haven't volunteered information on titles they own themselves. Its just one of those things I've come to live with smile.gif

As for Pirates of the Carribbean - I am happily that it is accurately rated. It only has one [S] which is clear in the main part of the information. There are two clear comments which say only the feature is subtitled. There is one comment from somebody who obviously misunderstood the ratings and gave it 3 [S]'s for having clear subtitling. This is a perfectly reasonable comment and I can't ignore it, but obviously I haven't passed this 3 [S] rating to the title.

I am trying to keep the database as accurate as possible and If there are any other titles you think are incorrectly rated, please let me know. Also if there are other ways you think I could improve the system I am using I would be very happy to listen.

Cheers,
Mat

mat, maybe you could add a form into dvd pages, where you have boxes for subtitles for : Episode, Commentary, Extras, Lyrics, and then people tick which apply? This will break it down much easier for people?

I don't want to make it too easy for people. Otherwise I'm just going to get random and unreliable information. I want a plain english explanation. This way I am more convinced the information is accurate. Its extremely common for me to get clear coments, but with the wrong rating - cos people have selected the wrong rating by accident.
